Normal cardiac output and cardiac index
The normal range of cardiac index at rest is 2.6–4.2 L/min/m . The cardiac index is frequently measured and used in both intensive care medicine and cardiac intensive care. The CI is a useful marker of how well the heart is functioning as a pump by directly correlating the volume of blood pumped by the heart with an individual's body surface area. If the CI falls acutely below 2.2 L/min/m , the patient may be in cardiogenic shock. Normal values for cardiac output obviously depend on height, weight and age. Normal cardiac index slightly decreases with age and weight 4. They are usually given within the following ranges 1,4: 1. cardiac output (CO): 4.0-8.0 L/min/m2and 3.1-6.4 L/min in individuals > 60 years 2. cardiac index (CI): 2.2-4.1 … Ver mais Cardiac output and cardiac index are used in the evaluation of patients with heart disease and critically ill patients as well as patients under general anesthesia 1.
